With National Walking Month in full swing, employees at Passenger, creators of the highest-rated transport software in the UK[1], are showing support for UK charity Living Streets by committing to walk 180 miles collectively before the end of May.
Living Streets has launched its #WalkThisMay campaign to inspire more people to take up walking as a regular form of exercise, helping them stay active and connect with others. The campaign comes as the charity revealed research showing what Britain has enjoyed most about walking this past year – with 76% naming physical health benefits and 56% citing better mental health from being more active. Over a third (33%) also said they would continue walking to reduce their carbon footprint.
Employees at Passenger have come together to pledge 45 short journeys per week throughout May to support Living Streets’ campaign, with the company also donating £250 to the charity. The resulting pledge equates to saving approximately 51,300 grams of CO2 and forms part of Passenger’s wider commitment to sustainability.
Tom Quay, CEO at Passenger commented: “We saw the beginning of positive changes to the environment when the first lockdown began, as Cabinet Office data showed motor traffic dropped by 73% compared to pre-outbreak levels. With restrictions in place, many people discovered the benefits of other means of transport, such as walking – from both a health and environmental perspective. Now that restrictions are lifting, we want people to keep up this mindset and continue opting for alternative methods of travel besides their car, which are kinder to the environment – whether that’s walking, cycling, or taking public transport.
“As a business, we’re focused on integrating eco-friendly practices into everything we do, as our technology exists to power sustainable transport. It’s inspiring to see our team commit to our sustainability focus not only during work, but also their personal time through their pledges to #WalkThisMay. We’re pleased to support Living Streets in their mission to get more people walking.”
Stephen Edwards, Director of Policy and Communications at Living Streets added: “We’re thrilled that the team at Passenger is getting involved and pledging to #WalkThisMay during National Walking Month. Going for a walk is a great way to stay active, helping employees stay healthy, happy, and energised during the working day. For people working from home, a walk at the beginning or end of the day can also really help to add some routine and balance to homeworking life. With benefits on offer to individuals’ health, as well as workplace productivity, we’re sure the team will continue to take steps beyond May!”
